Sketches of Spain at arms: Sim... Note

Sketches of Spain at arms: Sim, the anarchist illustrator who drew the civil war from the frontline

José Luis Rey Vila’s sketches provided an early and powerful depiction of the Spanish Civil War to the world. While Picasso is more famously known for his association with the conflict, Rey Vila captured the war's realities through his art. He utilized bold lines and vibrant colors to convey the urgency and movement of street battles. His sketches documented anarchist militias in intense combat situations. Rey Vila also portrayed scenes of quietude following the fighting. Using charcoal and watercolors, he created striking portraits of volunteers, nurses, and female soldiers. His artwork traveled extensively through exhibitions and reproduced booklets. This international exposure raised global awareness of the war. Rey Vila's work predated Picasso's famous depiction of Guernica's destruction. A new exhibition in Barcelona is now highlighting his significant but previously overlooked legacy.
