SoftBank Credit Risk Rises As Firm Mulls $20 Billion Bond Sale For OpenAI Stake
SoftBank Group's bonds saw a decline following reports of a potential $10 billion to $20 billion bond offering. This offering is being considered to refinance a substantial bridge loan associated with their investment in OpenAI. The potential issuance is expected to be denominated in both dollars and euros, though details are still fluid. A significant portion of the proceeds would go towards repaying the $40 billion bridge loan used for the OpenAI investment. Additionally, funds may be allocated for further artificial intelligence investments. SoftBank plans to invest over $65 billion in OpenAI by October, marking a large private AI commitment funded partially by debt. The company is exploring a 144A format for the notes, a first in over a decade, to access US institutional investors. This move aims to broaden the capital pool and potentially increase demand for the offering. The current environment sees significant borrowing by hyperscalers for AI infrastructure, impacting debt markets. SoftBank's spokesperson confirmed they are evaluating refinancing options but no concrete decisions have been made.
