Sporting Clube de Portugal gets a high-design rebrand inspired by the ’40s
Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP), founded in 1906 with a philosophy of developing the human before the athlete, is undergoing its first major rebrand in 25 years. The overhaul, led by agency JKR, aims to highlight the club's commitment to personal development and community. SCP, known for producing talents like Cristiano Ronaldo and Luís Figo, offers various sports for all ages and boasts over 180,000 members worldwide. The rebrand focuses on modernizing iconic historical assets rather than creating new ones. A significant change is the return of the club's 1945 crest, featuring a roaring lion within a shield, which members preferred over the 2001 version. JKR refined the lion's appearance with subtle aesthetic tweaks and incorporated an "S" shape in its tail. A new bespoke typeface, "Sporting Sans," was developed from the 1945 crest's lettering, featuring rounded angles for a contemporary feel. The brand's new core pattern is derived from tiles framing the original stadium doors, a symbolic entrance for legendary players. These archival elements have been artfully applied to create a modern, high-design aesthetic, reminiscent of a luxury fashion brand. The rebrand aims to make SCP's visual identity a source of pride and representation for its members, facilitating cultural relevance and collaborations.
