Stablecoin Payments Reach $482 Billion As Token Supply Barely Grows

A new payments dataset challenges the notion that stablecoin growth is solely dictated by the number of tokens in circulation. While the overall supply of digital dollars has seen minimal growth this year, their use in actual payments has significantly increased. Allium estimates identifiable stablecoin payments reached $482 billion through September, a substantial 45% rise from the previous year. This surge in payment activity contrasts sharply with a mere 0.4% increase in stablecoin supply, which now stands around $305 billion. The analytics firm also noted a 71% jump in payment transactions, reaching approximately 1.04 billion in the first nine months. This indicates a rise in the number of transactions, with the average payment size decreasing. These figures specifically filter for payment activity, excluding non-payment on-chain movements like arbitrage or internal transfers. This distinction is crucial as raw transfer totals can be misleading. The $482 billion estimate does not encompass all stablecoin transactions. Payment companies integrating traditional financial systems with blockchain technology are facilitating this shift, reducing reliance on crypto-specific tools. This evolving infrastructure is altering usage patterns despite stablecoin supply remaining relatively flat. While these numbers don't equate to profit or guaranteed consumer adoption, increased token turnover signifies a different market dynamic than one reliant on new issuance. This difference is becoming increasingly significant for payment providers.
