Stefan Sagmeister’s new shoe designs are actually walking infographics

Austrian graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister has created two unique shoes for German brand Ekn, transforming data visualization into wearable art. These shoes are showcased at his exhibition "Finally, Something Good" in Paris, which emphasizes long-term perspectives over daily news. One shoe, "Bring It On," uses multicolor panels to represent renewable energy sources based on 2024 statistics. The size of each panel corresponds to the proportion of energy generated by hydropower, wind, solar, and other renewables. Sagmeister notes that the data is already outdated, with solar power surpassing wind energy in recent figures. The second shoe, "Like a Complete Unknown," is a boot that uses circular appliqués to illustrate homelessness rates across six countries. The area of each circle signifies the number of homeless individuals per 100,000 inhabitants, with the U.S. and Germany having the largest representations. Sagmeister highlights that the significant differences in homelessness rates, even between countries of similar economic status, point to policy decisions rather than insurmountable challenges. Both shoe designs are available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds donated to relevant charities. Sagmeister acknowledges the ethical tension of selling expensive boots representing homelessness but hopes the shoes inspire reflection on the potential for change. He believes the data suggests that both renewable energy adoption and homelessness are not predetermined outcomes but rather the result of choices.
