Store closures update 2026: See a list of retailers that have shuttered the most locations this year
Coresight Research's latest report indicates a potential decrease in both store openings and closings in the U.S. retail sector for 2026 compared to 2025. The firm projects up to 8,228 store closures this year, a reduction from 2025's 9,197. In the first half of 2026, 3,321 store closures were tracked, a significant drop from the same period in 2025. However, thousands of closures are still expected, with retailers exercising more selectivity in their expansion plans. GameStop, Francesca's, and Eddie Bauer are among the retailers anticipated to close the most stores. Conversely, store openings have also declined, with 3,215 tracked so far in 2026, less than the 2025 midyear count. Dollar General and Dollar Tree are leading in planned store openings. The apparel sector has recorded the highest number of closures, an increase from the previous year, often linked to bankruptcies. Convenience stores and electronics retailers also contributed significantly to the closure figures. Despite the overall projected decrease, the second half of 2026 could see additional closures due to economic pressures and consumer spending habits.
