Stricter classifications for Google Groups to enhance data security and privacy

Google is implementing enhanced data security and privacy changes for Google Groups. These updates, currently rolling out, include stricter classifications of groups as internal or external. Visual indicators will now clearly show if a group contains external members. The display of emails within Google Groups is also being modified. Granular control over who can add external users is introduced, limiting this ability to administrators or both administrators and end users. For API usage, a previous requirement for admins to reclassify internal groups before adding external members has been adjusted. Now, when admins try to add external members to internal groups via APIs or third-party syncing, the group settings will automatically update. Existing groups will be automatically classified based on current membership, with no immediate access changes for users. Administrators can review and adjust these classifications in the Admin console or through the Groups Settings API. End users do not need to take any action. These changes are rolling out now and are expected to be completed by July 1, 2026, for all Google Workspace customers.
