Sudden Change Of Heart By Colombia's Petro: 'Good Call' With Trump Leads To Planned WH Meeting

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, a vocal critic of Trump's foreign policy, has drastically altered his stance. This shift followed Trump's hinted threats of military action against Colombia related to drug trafficking. Petro and Trump engaged in an hour-long phone call facilitated by the US Embassy. The call was perceived positively by both sides, with the Colombian Foreign Ministry describing it as a "good meeting." Trump expressed appreciation for Petro's call and tone, subsequently extending an invitation for a White House meeting. These developments came soon after Trump had strongly criticized Petro, even suggesting his country was "very sick." Trump's rhetoric shifted, now indicating a desire to further relations and cooperation, setting up a meeting facilitated by Marco Rubio and Colombia’s foreign minister. Petro, previously a leftist leader, is now promising cooperation and blaming drug cartels for the strained relations. He attributed the negative portrayal to Colombian politicians allegedly connected to narco-trafficking. Trump’s veiled warnings of “muscular action” were issued against Cuba and Mexico earlier in the week. Mexico is now expected to also try to mend ties with Trump. This dramatic shift highlights the power dynamics and influence of Trump’s foreign policy approach.
