Supreme Court Allows Texas To Require Age Verification For Mobile Apps
The Supreme Court has permitted Texas to enforce a new law that mandates app stores to verify users' ages. This law also requires parental consent for minors to download applications. Tech industry organizations contend that this legislation significantly limits young people's access to digital speech. The Supreme Court's decision allows Texas to implement the law while legal challenges continue. Texas argued that children downloading apps agree to potentially problematic terms regarding privacy and data sales. Trade groups, including those representing Apple and Google, stated the law would restrict access to diverse content, impacting digital speech protections. A federal district court had previously blocked the law's enforcement. However, the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals later put that block on hold. By not intervening, the Supreme Court has effectively allowed the 5th Circuit's decision to stand. This means the age verification law can be enforced as the case proceeds.
