Switch from live stream viewer to contributor in Google Meet on Android
Google Meet now allows Android users to seamlessly switch from watching a live stream to actively participating with audio and video. This functionality is designed for viewers who have received invitations to both the live stream and the main meeting. Users can initiate this role change directly within the app by interacting with the meeting title, a live streaming badge, or an info button. This integrated workflow bypasses the need to rejoin using separate links or switch between applications. Standard meeting access permissions and domain policies will continue to govern participation, ensuring only authorized individuals can join with media capabilities. The entry points for this feature will only be visible to eligible viewers, maintaining the security of meetings and events. This ability to switch roles is already a feature on Google Meet for iOS and web platforms. For administrators, there are no specific controls required for this new feature. End users on Android devices will see the option to transition from watching a live stream to becoming an active participant in the main meeting room. The rollout for this feature began on October 19, 2026, and it is available across various Google Workspace editions and for personal Google accounts.
