Taste cannot be delegated
AI democratizes execution, shifting the competitive advantage to strategic thinking and judgment. Taste is not simply learned or measured; it requires exposure to exceptional work and understanding foundational design principles. However, recognizing quality is insufficient; true value emerges when there is responsibility to act on that recognition. Generative AI excels at predicting user preferences based on vast datasets but lacks the capacity for genuine intent and context-based judgment. Organizations often fall into the trap of replacing judgment with preference aggregation, leading to diluted decisions and average outcomes. Successful innovation, like the iPhone's multi-touch display or The New York Times' "Snow Fall," stems from bold judgment that anticipates future needs rather than optimizing existing ones. Design leadership is crucial for protecting this judgment by integrating various perspectives into a coherent point of view and resolving disagreements, not eliminating them. A healthy design organization fosters clear ownership, where feedback enhances decisions rather than replacing them. The ultimate consequence of design by committee is not failure, but forgettability, as it prioritizes pleasing everyone slightly over deeply exciting anyone. AI will not replace taste, but it will expose the limitations of organizations that have substituted it with mere preference prediction and aggregation.
