Tekona Reijindo in Ichikawa, Japan

In the town of Mama, a beautiful and kind-hearted girl named Tekona lived. She was married to the lord of a neighboring province but was forced to return to her homeland due to a feud, bringing only her child with her. Every morning, Tekona would go to an old well to draw water, attracting the attention of local men who began to woo her. Despite their advances, Tekona rejected them, stating that she could not marry just one as it would make the others unhappy. This led to men fighting each other and falling ill from heartaches, causing Tekona to feel sad and eventually drown herself in the sea at sundown. The men of Mama regretted their actions after finding her body the next morning. A century later, Buddhist saint Gyōki founded Guhō-ji temple on the site of Tekona's burial, and her legend inspired classical poets. In 1501, Tekona appeared in the head priest's dream, thanking him for the offerings and promising to protect and bring good luck to people. This led to the establishment of Tekona Reijindo, a shrine dedicated to the legendary girl. As a local goddess, Tekona is known for protecting children and pregnant women, promising good luck and safe childbirth, as well as being a powerful matchmaker who brings lasting relationships to those who pray to her.
