The affordability question Republicans can't escape
Republican supporters are increasingly concerned about rising gas prices, a key issue even among loyal party members. Republicans had promised to lower gas prices, but they have significantly increased since President Trump took office. This issue was repeatedly raised at campaign events attended by Republican leaders like Tom Emmer and Steve Scalise, even among their core supporters. Attendees at these events expressed worries about high prices and questioned what more could be done to increase domestic energy production. Scalise acknowledged the impact of the Iran war but also blamed Democratic energy policies for increased vulnerability. Emmer also heard concerns about gas and diesel prices, calling them unacceptable for constituents who are struggling. Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton privately cited the war and gas prices as major contributors to his campaign difficulties. Republican leaders understand that voters expect honesty regarding these affordability challenges. The sentiment is that "gaslighting" voters about the issue will not be effective. Candidates need to have honest conversations with constituents to address their concerns.
