The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula boasts unique, brightly painted, and richly decorated front doors dating back to the 18th century, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage since 2018. The town of Prerow particularly highlights these exquisite examples along its Front Doors Path. This region was originally three separate islands—Fischland, Darß, and Zingst—which were gradually connected to the mainland and each other between the 14th and 19th centuries. The distinctive front doors are predominantly found on the Darß section of the peninsula.The proliferation of these doors coincided with the prosperity brought by sailing in the 18th century, making the front door a central architectural focal point. These doors feature elaborate reliefs with symbols like flowers, trees of life, anchors, and suns, many rooted in pre-Christian beliefs for protection and good fortune. Sailors also incorporated exotic symbols observed during their voyages. Initially, these doors were not colorful but mostly muted green, gray, or reddish-brown.The tradition waned after 1850 with the decline of sailing's importance. However, in 1931, Prerow's mayor, Heinrich Bierbaum, revived the tradition by commissioning a colorful symbolic front door for the new municipal office. This marked a resurgence, leading to the renovation of old doors and the creation of new, handcrafted ones for contemporary homes.Today, the "Darßer Haustürenpfad" in Prerow offers a circular route, just over 6 km long, where visitors can admire doors from 1790 to the present. The path notably begins at the former mayor's door, now home to the Tourist Information Office, where maps and descriptions are available.
