The DevFest season began at Google Hudson Square in New York City with 80 engineers. This workshop introduced a novel approach called Workbench, prioritizing understanding core concepts over rote code memorization. Attendees focused on mental models for graph engineering, self-evolving architectures, and automated self-patching harnesses. The day involved building long-running, self-evolving multi-agent systems using Google's agentic stack. Ricky Robinett explained why prompt engineering falls short as a safety mechanism for agents. Rachel Francois and GDG Brooklyn organizers highlighted the importance of local developer communities and shared patterns. Annie Wang and Christina Lin led a lab where participants used Google's Agent Development Kit and other tools. This session demonstrated separating state from compute for efficient long-running tasks. Later, Logan Hennessy and Kartik Derasari facilitated a lab integrating BigQuery data into autonomous pipelines for better bidding strategies. This included implementing self-patching harnesses to detect and correct spend anomalies, with fast-paced quizzes adding an element of competitive engagement. The DevFest Workbench experience is touring five more cities this fall, with registration spots filling quickly.
