The hate speech landscape on Facebook is worse than you thought. Here’s why

Charlie Kirk and his conservative youth organization Turning Point spent $5,000 on Facebook ads in April, using the term "groomer" as an anti-LGBTQ slur. This is not the first time Kirk and Turning Point have been flagged for violating Facebook's use standards. In 2020, Facebook had to ban a "troll army" of 275 accounts, 55 pages, and $1.2 million worth of ads that Turning Point used to spread misinformation and promote its content. Since 2019, Kirk and Turning Point have purchased over 10,000 Facebook ads, while the Daily Wire and its top personalities have run over 11,000. Mainstream media companies, on the other hand, have run significantly fewer ads, with the New York Times running 490, NPR running five, CNN running 1,000, and Apple running 240.
