The perfect foldable phone will never exist

Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold8 attempts to minimize compromises in foldable phone technology. Its new passport-like shape is designed to be more pocketable and unfolds into a small tablet with a barely noticeable crease. Samsung targets users who consume video, a broad demographic, potentially influencing Apple's rumored foldable design. However, the Fold8 introduces its own set of trade-offs, impacting one-handed use with its wider outer screen. Some apps and websites struggle with this squat display format, leading to usability issues. Samsung previously narrowed the outer screen for easier one-handed use, but this made the inner screen almost square and resulted in larger black bars on videos. The Fold8's 4:3 aspect ratio on the unfolded screen reduces black bars for widescreen videos and hides the camera cutout. This design prioritizes content consumption over multitasking, with partial folding capability relegated to the Fold8 Ultra. This trade-off is considered worthwhile by analysts for video-centric users seeking minimal creases. Ultimately, the foldable phone market may not settle on a single form factor, allowing for diverse shapes and sizes.
