The Push To Bring Back Recess Time In Public Schools
Spencer Taylor experienced a difficult high school education, marked by frequent disciplinary actions and a lack of adequate breaks. This personal struggle inspired his documentary, "The Death of Recess," which highlights the national decline of recess in schools. Taylor's research revealed that competing interests often prioritize instructional time over student well-being, leaving parents and students without a strong advocacy voice. His film aligns with a growing movement to reinstate or increase recess, supported by research linking it to improved academic performance and mental health. Thirteen states now legally require recess until middle school, and twelve mandate weekly physical activity. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends multiple 20-minute breaks daily. A new parent group, Say Yes to Recess, is actively lobbying policymakers. Johns Hopkins University has published policy guidance advocating for at least 20 minutes of daily recess for K-8 students. Many states are enacting legislation to ensure recess, with some proposing 30 minutes or more daily. Parent organizations are gaining momentum, emphasizing practical solutions to reintegrate recess without extending the school day.
