Smedens Bro, or "The Blacksmith's Bridge," is a pedestrian and cycling bridge located in central Aarhus. It was constructed in 1911 through the initiative and funding of local ironsmith Hans Peter Jensen. Jensen aimed to improve accessibility for residents in his neighborhood by building this bridge. The bridge spans the Aarhus River and features light grey railings that curve outward, framing the city's coat of arms. A peculiar feature of the bridge is found on eight pillars at each end. These pillars display identical relief figures with exaggerated ears, blank eyes, and contorted faces. The figures are depicted in a pose suggesting they are relieving themselves. Their exact meaning is debated, but they are often identified as solgryller. Solgryller are Danish folkloric creatures linked to the summer solstice, believed to dictate how long the sun pauses at its zenith. Before a 2025 renovation, these figures were brightly painted and more prominent. They now blend into the bridge's color, making them less conspicuous but still remarkably strange.
