At twelve or thirteen years old, Michelangelo was already showing signs of being one of the greatest artists the world would ever know. Apprenticing under the prominent Florentine painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, he created a work so masterful that for centuries it was believed to be that of his master. The Torment of Saint Anthony, a religious scene painted around 1487, was based on a print by Martin Schöngauer. However, Michelangelo adds his own touches to the painting, for instance basing the demons' details and textures off of animals he observed at a market.The painting was not attributed to him until an art dealer brought it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for restoration. They found that the painting's color palette and style resembled other works by Michelangelo, especially his famous Sistine Chapel. Infrared reflectography also found that corrections were made during the painting process, confirming that the painting is not a mere copy of another artist. Further studies have confirmed that the Torment of Saint Anthony was a work by Michelangelo, making it one of only four easel paintings by him. It was acquired by the Kimbell Art Museum soon after, making it the only Michelangelo painting housed in the Americas.
