The unusual way Google is involved in the Spirit Airlines bankruptcy—and what that means for you
Spirit Airlines unexpectedly ceased operations, marking the first major U.S. airline to dissolve entirely in 25 years, rather than being acquired. This closure left travelers with fewer affordable flight options and sparked an unsuccessful attempt by influencers to purchase and revive the airline. Spirit's assets are now being liquidated, including its planes, real estate, and valuable data. Google emerged as the highest bidder, offering $10 million for Spirit's comprehensive dataset. The company plans to use this data to train its artificial intelligence models. This dataset includes internal communications, transactions, and frequent flyer information, though it will be anonymized. A Google spokesperson confirmed the purchase will aid AI development without personal customer or employee details. AI startup Mercor was the second-highest bidder, offering $7.5 million for the same dataset. A bankruptcy judge will review the sale of Spirit's data on Wednesday. This transaction is being viewed by some as evidence that data is the new oil, potentially setting a precedent for future sales of data from bankrupt companies.
