The world’s second Sphere is coming to the Middle East

The United Arab Emirates' capital, Abu Dhabi, is set to host the world's second Sphere, a giant dome entertainment complex, following the success of the first one in Las Vegas. The Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism and Sphere Entertainment Co. announced the plan, with Abu Dhabi paying a franchise fee to use Sphere Entertainment's designs. The Emirati government will cover the construction costs and annual fees for creative and artistic content. The announcement did not provide financing details or a specific location for the project in Abu Dhabi. The Las Vegas Sphere, which opened in 2023, is a $2.3 billion entertainment venue featuring a high-resolution LED screen and hosting concerts and sporting events. Efforts to build a second Sphere in London were rejected due to concerns including light pollution. Abu Dhabi is trying to differentiate itself as a travel destination from neighboring Dubai, and the UAE is also preparing to open its first casino. Sphere Entertainment Co. is the brainchild of James Dolan, and its stock rose over 6% on the New York Stock Exchange following the announcement. The company has also trademarked its name in Japan, Oman, and Qatar, although no plans for similar venues have been announced.
