This Virus Stole a Human Gene and Won't Let Go of It

Scientists have identified a virus containing a human gene, acquired approximately 100,000 years ago. This gene, known as BC200, is crucial for brain function and possesses the ability to move within genomes. BC200 is unique to humans and closely related primates and was initially found in human neurons. Its precise function remains unclear, but it may regulate the creation of proteins from messenger RNA in neurons. Researchers hypothesize that BC200 may have entered human cells through skin infections caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). The gene's abnormal expression in certain tumors and its overexpression in Alzheimer's patients suggest a potential role in these conditions. Scientists are investigating whether MCV utilizes BC200 to control human host cells. Further research will explore the gene's involvement in various cancers, including breast cancer, and if it causes mutations by jumping within cancer cells.
