Three New California Laws Target Tech Companies' Interactions with Children
Gavin Newsom signed new California laws regulating tech companies and their interactions with minors. AB 56 mandates health warnings on social media platforms for users under 18, with duration depending on usage. These warnings will highlight the potential mental health risks associated with social media. SB 243, the first of its kind, regulates AI companion chatbots operating in California. This law requires age verification, disclosure of AI generation, and restrictions on impersonating healthcare professionals. Chatbots must offer break reminders and prevent minors from viewing explicit content. The legislation arose partly due to tragedies involving AI and young users. AB 1043 compels device makers to collect birthdates when setting up devices for children. Device makers will share age bracket data with apps. Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Snap supported the bill, while the Motion Picture Association opposed it.
