Trump administration may block another offshore wind farm
The Trump administration is reconsidering federal approval for Avangrid's New England Wind project off Massachusetts. This action follows a similar move to reconsider approval of another Massachusetts project, SouthCoast Wind. The Department of Justice plans to vacate the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's approval of the New England Wind construction plan by October 10. This decision stems from a lawsuit filed by local groups opposing offshore wind development, alleging environmental law violations. Avangrid, owned by Iberdrola, has not commented on the situation. The New England Wind project was initially approved by the Biden administration in 2024. Once completed, it was projected to generate enough electricity for 900,000 homes. Trump has previously criticized offshore wind energy as ugly, expensive, and unreliable. This move represents a continued effort by U.S. authorities to hinder offshore wind energy development. The lead plaintiff in the lawsuit, ACK for Whales, has not yet commented.
