Trump Doubles Down On $5,000 Payments Tied To Midterm Results
President Trump has reiterated his promise to give every adult U.S. citizen $5,000 if Republicans secure control of both the House and the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. He stated that Democratic policies would prevent such a payout and instead lead to higher taxes or economic depression. Trump made this identical pledge at a rally in San Antonio on October 7th, without specifying the funding mechanism or congressional approval needs. Estimates suggest the cost of this proposal would be around $1.35 trillion, based on the adult citizen population. The president first mentioned these potential payments in a Dallas speech aimed at boosting Republican voter turnout. However, not all Republicans support the plan, with some, like Representative Chip Roy, expressing concerns about dependency. Democrats have voiced opposition, arguing the proposal would increase the national debt, fuel inflation, and negatively impact loan costs. House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated that congressional approval would likely be necessary for such payments. Conversely, Trump suggested in a CBS interview that he might not require congressional action. He has frequently referenced these potential payments in speeches and on social media since his Dallas event. During a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Trump specifically stated that only Republicans could enact this $5,000 payment. He proposed that tariff revenue and economic growth from new investments would fund these payments. In a separate announcement, Trump also detailed plans for health insurance rebate payments, including to Medicare beneficiaries and individuals overcharged on Affordable Care Act exchanges. Emails indicated that Medicare recipients would receive $90 payments, potentially reaching 20 million people. Previously, a video announced $500 rebate payments to nearly one million people affected by alleged overcharges on Obamacare exchanges under the Biden administration.
