Trump isn't out to hurt Ukraine, Rubio tells Zelensky
Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to clarify U.S. policy and address concerns about potential harm to Ukraine. Rubio assured Zelensky that President Trump has not ordered any actions to damage Ukraine. The call aimed to de-escalate tensions and counter accusations that Trump is pressuring Zelensky for concessions to Russia. This conversation preceded new peace talks with White House envoy Steve Witkoff to unify European allies on a peace proposal for Russia. The crisis began when Trump announced a diesel deal with Russia concurrently with U.S. envoy negotiations in Miami. Zelensky had previously urged senators to pressure the administration regarding intelligence sharing and weapons supplies. Rubio stated that the Pentagon has not altered intelligence sharing, weapons sales, or restrictions on the Starshield satellite system. He clarified that any delays in Patriot interceptors are due to U.S. global military needs, not deliberate denial. Rubio also attributed missed warnings of Russian missile attacks to technical failures, not a U.S. order. He acknowledged U.S. frustration over stalled peace talks and perceived unfair accusations. Zelensky expressed gratitude for Rubio's support and reiterated Ukraine's need for missile interceptors and restored Starlink and Starshield services. Witkoff is now in Oslo for talks with Zelensky and European leaders before visiting Russia.
