Trump: 'Netanyahu Knows Who The Boss Is' After Phone Call
President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are planning to meet soon in the United States. This announcement follows a phone call where Netanyahu congratulated Trump on American Independence Day. Trump commented to Axios that he and Netanyahu get along well and that Netanyahu understands who is in charge. Recent US-Israel relations have been strained, primarily due to Israeli reluctance regarding a US-Iran memorandum of understanding and a US-mediated ceasefire in Lebanon. Israel harbors concerns about a nuclear-armed Iran, with some leaders advocating for regime change through military action. Despite these tensions, Netanyahu's office stated that Israel greatly values its close relationship with the United States. Some of Trump's advisors reportedly believe Netanyahu was incorrect on certain issues. Previously, Trump had reportedly expressed anger at Netanyahu over Israel's actions in Lebanon, calling him "crazy" and ungrateful. This friction has contributed to a Republican division regarding Israel and the war. Trump's recent public statement about Netanyahu knowing "who the boss is" appears to be an effort to counter narratives of Israeli influence. A previous call in June between the leaders was reportedly contentious, with Trump reportedly criticizing Netanyahu for breaking a Lebanon truce. Israeli officials have attempted to downplay negative reports about the relationship, with Netanyahu describing it as "excellent" while acknowledging occasional tactical disagreements. The US has since influenced Israel to observe the Lebanon ceasefire, though IDF occupation in southern Lebanon persists. Missile exchanges between Iran and Israel have ceased.
