Trump once questioned Obama's citizenship. Now Obama is speaking out for Ilhan Omar.
Former President Barack Obama strongly condemned the Trump administration's legal pursuit of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. Obama denounced the Department of Justice's raid on Omar's home last week, viewing it as a betrayal of American values. He stated that any administration engaging in such transparent intimidation efforts should outrage all Americans. Obama warned that if this becomes the new normal, it could set a dangerous precedent for future presidents. Federal agents raided Omar's home, seizing her phone as part of an investigation into alleged false information on immigration paperwork. The Wall Street Journal reported the administration aims to strip her of U.S. citizenship and deport her. Investigators believe Omar may have been a year older than recorded, potentially making her ineligible for automatic citizenship. The first Trump administration reviewed similar allegations in 2019 but found insufficient evidence for a full investigation. Omar has called the investigation a "witch hunt" and an abuse of power, especially close to an election. Obama’s statement emphasized that the federal government is targeting an elected official for criticizing the president, comparing it to previous unsubstantiated prosecutions.
