Trump open to summit with Xi and Putin — to discuss denuclearization

President Trump has proposed holding an unprecedented trilateral summit with Chinese President Xi and Russian President Putin in China next month. The primary agenda item Trump envisions for this meeting is "denuclearization," though not necessarily focused on Ukraine. Trump has publicly expressed his desire for a nuclear weapons reduction deal with Russia and China for two years. However, neither President Putin nor President Xi have demonstrated significant openness to this concept. Trump is scheduled to visit China in mid-November for the APEC leaders' meeting in Shenzhen. The Kremlin has been suggesting a trilateral meeting since July, with Putin raising the idea with Trump multiple times. The Chinese government has not yet indicated its willingness to host such a summit. When questioned about including discussions on ending the war in Ukraine, Trump stated his interest was in denuclearization. He indicated that while he would hold the meeting, its purpose would be to address denuclearization rather than the conflict in Ukraine. This proposed summit aims to bring together the leaders of the United States, China, and Russia for strategic arms reduction talks.
