Trump Orders New 15% Tariff On Key Material For Solar Panels, Microchips

President Trump has imposed a 15% tariff on imported polysilicon products, effective December 4th. This measure aims to bolster domestic polysilicon production, a critical component for semiconductors and solar panels. Polysilicon's purity is essential for AI, data centers, and solar energy generation. US solar manufacturers have accused China of unfairly competing through subsidies and offshore production to avoid existing tariffs. The United States currently has two primary polysilicon factories. Hemlock Semiconductor, a joint venture, operates a plant in Michigan. Wacker Chemie, based in Munich, runs a facility in Tennessee. The executive order also sets minimum import prices for polysilicon and related products. Additionally, the Commerce Department is authorized to establish incentives for domestic polysilicon manufacturing investments. These actions are intended to support US economic and national security requirements.
