President Trump has signed the Russia sanctions bill into law, which allows for up to 100% tariffs on major Russian oil and gas purchasers. The new law also sanctions President Putin, his officials, oligarchs, and Russian banks. The Kremlin has stated that this action moves Russia-Ukraine peace further away. Russia has formally demanded that Japan remove US Typhon missile systems deployed there. This system, capable of launching nuclear-capable Tomahawk and SM-6 missiles, can reach parts of China and eastern Russia. Russia considers the deployment unacceptable and a threat to regional stability. A protest note was delivered to Japan regarding the deployment on Kyushu. Japan was urged to cease this practice and remove the systems. The Typhon missile system would have been banned under the former INF Treaty. The US withdrew from this treaty in 2019. Russia is no longer bound by a moratorium on deploying such missile systems. This situation could lead Moscow to increase its own border deployments.
