Trump tells Axios why he endorsed Netanyahu's reelection
Former President Trump endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu just nine days before Israel's upcoming election, a move that could significantly boost Netanyahu's campaign. Trump, in a Truth Social post, lauded Netanyahu as a "Great Warrior Prime Minister" and a vital partner in the fight against Iran. He also stated that America might have to handle the Iran issue independently if Israel elects a leader other than Netanyahu. Trump told Axios he deliberately waited to endorse, emphasizing their strong relationship and the importance of a reliable Israeli leader. Netanyahu thanked Trump on X, while his rival, Gadi Eisenkot, stressed that the election is an internal Israeli matter. This endorsement marks a shift, as Trump had previously refrained from backing Netanyahu amid growing tensions and private frustrations over the October 7 Hamas attacks. Despite earlier reservations and advice from some close advisors, Trump ultimately decided to support Netanyahu. The two leaders recently discussed a potential major operation against Iran before their respective elections, with Trump suggesting he would allow Netanyahu to act after the midterms.
