U.S. Civil War Veteran's Grave... Note

U.S. Civil War Veteran's Grave in Stockport, England

In a small municipal cemetery in Stockport, England, lies the grave of George A. Costello, an American Civil War veteran. His grave marker, a sandstone slab, is located in a Catholic burial section and is notable as one of the few resting places of American Civil War veterans in the UK. The marker has a leaning cross, its original three-foot height damaged. The inscription identifies George A. Costello, a veteran who died on July 31st, 1915, at the age of 75. It also mentions his wife, Mary Costello, who died in 1919, and Emily Rose Parr and Norah Parr. George Costello served in the American Civil War enlisted as a substitute and was promoted to Corporal. He was wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, which led to his transfer to the Veteran's Reserve Corps. Family lore suggests he was part of Abraham Lincoln's guard detail at Ford's Theatre, though this is unlikely. After the war, George returned to Dublin and struggled to resume his work as a coach maker due to his injury. He eventually received a U.S. government pension and later moved to Stockport around 1891. By the time of his death, his grandson, Liam Parr, was involved in the Irish Republican movement, organizing arms shipments from England and later participating in the Easter Rising.
