U.S. Open trophy replicas have been smaller for women champs than men. Not anymore
Coco Gauff was surprised by the significantly smaller replica trophy she received after winning the French Open. She documented this on TikTok, which gained millions of views. Gauff expected a larger keepsake, having received a comparable-sized trophy for winning the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open actually changed its policy recently, providing women's singles champions with a replica trophy the same size as the men's. This was a departure from previous years where the women's replica was smaller. The U.S. Tennis Association decided to maintain the historical design of the women's trophy while ensuring the replica was equal in size to the men's. This change coincided with the 50th anniversary of equal prize money for men and women at the tournament. The USTA emphasized their commitment to equality in all aspects of the event. Billie Jean King, who advocated for equal prize money, was unaware of the trophy size change but found it to be a positive development. She believes it sends a strong message of equality.
