Uber Begins Self-Driving Robotaxi Trial In Manchester
Uber is piloting autonomous vehicles in Manchester, a move that could lead to robotaxis across the UK. This trial utilizes technology from their partners, Pony and Verne, with whom they recently launched a similar service in Zagreb. Initially, the Manchester tests involve mapping the city streets with safety drivers, not passengers. Verne and Pony have confirmed their involvement in testing and plans for robotaxis in Manchester. This follows limited passenger services that began in London last month, also with safety drivers present. However, the expansion of robotaxis faces significant opposition. Uber drivers and unions are concerned about substantial job losses and are demanding support for affected workers. A London report also raised concerns about the actual benefits of autonomous vehicles. This report highlighted potential negative impacts on public transport, congestion, and accessibility for disabled individuals. Furthermore, the report suggested the government should grant more control over autonomous taxi services. Currently, there has been no official request to start passenger services in Manchester.
