"Unbelievable Damage": 131-Mph Windstorm Snaps Wind Turbines In Half Across South Dakota
An early morning storm caused extensive damage in Highmore, South Dakota. The South Dakota Mesonet station recorded a wind gust of 131 mph, which is comparable to Category 4 hurricane strength. Local meteorologists expressed shock at the intensity of the winds. These violent straight-line winds were strong enough to topple grain silos and damage infrastructure. Large wind turbines were also knocked over by the storm. Images from Highmore show significant destruction, including damaged grain bins and debris scattered in the streets. A camper was also flipped over due to the powerful winds. The National Weather Service is currently reviewing the storm's severity. This review includes the possibility of state or national wind gust records being set.
