Union Contract with Microsoft Ratified by 1,900 Blizzard Developers and Workers
Blizzard Entertainment workers have successfully ratified their first union contract with Microsoft, consolidating multiple smaller unions into three larger bargaining units. This agreement brings significant new protections for nearly 1900 employees. The contract specifically addresses generative AI, ensuring that its implementation impacting union employees requires prior bargaining over its effects. It also guarantees that workers will be credited by name in all games they contribute to, both current and former employees. Remote work policies are now established, with certain roles designated as hybrid and procedures for requesting full remote status. The contract safeguards existing hybrid work schedules, preventing unilateral changes by Blizzard management. Existing fully remote workers are grandfathered in, ensuring they cannot be compelled to work from an office. Layoff procedures are clearly defined, including a 60-day notice period or pay in lieu, one week of severance pay per six months of employment, and 14 months of recall rights. Furthermore, the contract includes a successorship clause, meaning it will remain binding even if Blizzard is acquired by another company. Finally, the agreement raises the pay floor, with a general 1.25% increase and significant raises for employees earning below $50,000 annually, some up to 34%.
