Upcoming Change to Drive Sharing Permissions

Google Drive is changing its access experience for files and folders starting September 22, 2025. Restricted access on specific items within a shared folder will no longer be permitted. Instead, limited access will be managed consistently through the limited access folder setting. Users who could previously restrict access only to individual items will lose that option. Also, starting September 22, 2025, the "Editors can change permissions and share" setting will behave differently. Turning this setting off will still prevent editors from sharing, but items placed in a shared folder will inherit the folder's access permissions. Previously, this inheritance only happened if the item's owner made the folder change. Beginning October 8, 2025, limited access will be applied to items where this setting is turned off. This will restrict sharing of these existing items to the owner only. However, new items with this setting turned off after October 8, 2025, will not have limited access applied. No immediate user action is required as these are system-wide logic changes. The rollout will be gradual, starting on September 22, 2025, and will be available to all Google Workspace customers and personal Google account users.
