US Again Rebuffs Riyadh's Yemen Plea As 100,000-Man Force Readies For War

Saudi Arabia and Yemeni government forces are preparing for a significant offensive against Houthi rebels. This operation aims to recapture the Red Sea coast and secure the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, crucial for global shipping. Over 100,000 pro-government troops are expected to mobilize for this effort. The Saudis are considering two attack strategies: a targeted assault on the Bab el-Mandeb area or a broader offensive across multiple Yemeni governorates. The United States has confirmed it will not participate directly in the offensive. Despite requests from Riyadh, the U.S. has refused to provide direct military aid, including airstrikes. Saudi Arabia had sought U.S. warplane support and airstrikes for ground operations, but these requests were denied. U.S. officials view direct involvement as a distraction from other priorities, such as operations against Iran and securing the Strait of Hormuz. Past U.S. support in Yemen had limited impact on the ground and contributed to civilian suffering. The offensive is being planned after recent Houthi gains embarrassed the Saudi-led coalition.
