US And Venezuela Explore Restoring Diplomatic Ties After Maduro's Capture

The United States and Venezuela are exploring reestablishing diplomatic relations following a U.S. military operation that captured and extradited former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. A U.S. delegation visited Caracas to assess reopening the American Embassy, closed since 2019 after the U.S. recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó. Venezuela's interim government, led by Delcy Rodríguez, plans to send its own delegation to the U.S. in response. This move may require waivers from U.S. sanctions imposed on Venezuelan officials. Rodríguez is facing domestic pressure, including anger from military hardliners over Maduro's capture. She emphasized diplomacy to secure peace and the return of Maduro and his wife. The U.S. is seeking cooperation on drug trafficking and control of Venezuela's oil reserves. Maduro pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges in a New York federal court. The U.S. president also invited oil company executives to discuss investing in Venezuela's oil industry. Venezuela will send 30 million barrels of oil to the U.S. following Maduro's ousting and the establishment of a transitional government.
