US Launches Tariff Action Over Chinese "Unreasonable" Pursuit Of Chip Industry Dominance

The US has declared the trade truce with China concerning semiconductors over, accusing Beijing of aiming for dominance in the sector. This determination, made by the US Trade Representative, deems China's actions "unreasonable and discriminatory". The US plans to impose tariffs on Chinese semiconductor imports due to China's industrial ambitions. These tariffs will begin in June 2027, with the specific rate revealed a month before implementation. This decision follows an investigation initiated in late 2024 that examined China’s semiconductor import practices. The USTR concluded China uses “non-market policies” to seize global market share in the semiconductor industry. China's efforts target all segments of the semiconductor supply chain, according to the US. These actions have harmed US companies, workers, and the economy by creating dangerous dependencies. The US Trade Representative considers China's actions actionable under trade laws. This move is seen as a continuation of efforts to address trade imbalances. Another investigation into chip imports is underway, potentially leading to further tariffs.
