American politicians Ron Wyden and Warren Davidson have written to the UK's investigatory powers tribunal regarding Apple's legal dispute. They are urging the court to be more transparent in its handling of the case. The dispute began in January 2025 when the UK Home Office demanded Apple provide access to encrypted iCloud backups worldwide. Apple responded by withdrawing its advanced data protection feature from UK users. The company challenged the order, but their case was dismissed when the government issued a revised, narrower notice. Wyden and Davidson stated that it is inappropriate for a foreign executive body to dictate powers within the US government. They also argue that secrecy directives should not be used to hinder US constitutional powers. Congress asserted its position as a co-equal branch and stated that no government should place demands beyond legislative inquiry. The politicians accused the UK government of hypocrisy for championing oversight at home while using gag orders to limit US congressional authority.
