The United States has sanctioned a UK-based senior Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood official and six other individuals and entities for providing material support to Hamas. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated these actions target MB affiliates and Hamas-directed front organizations disguised as charities. Mahmoud al-Abyari, identified as the UK-based secretary general of the Muslim Brotherhood General Secretariat, was among those sanctioned by the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control. OFAC reported that al-Abyari facilitated fundraising for organizations with alleged Hamas ties and worked with MB groups to financially support Hamas. Two charities, one in Indonesia and another in Gaza, and a Turkey-based money exchange firm were also designated. The money exchange firm, El-Kahira for General Trading, allegedly transferred significant funds to Hamas and provided underground banking services for organized crime. Three men connected to the firm, including its owner, were also sanctioned. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent vowed to relentlessly pursue and hold accountable those who enable Hamas through any means. These measures align with previous designations targeting Hamas financial facilitators and MB-linked charities. The sanctions freeze U.S. assets of designated individuals and entities and expose foreign financial institutions to secondary sanctions. This U.S. action contrasts with the UK's approach, as the UK has not proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood, despite a review acknowledging its potential indicators of extremism. Former UK Commissioner for Countering Extremism Robin Simcox criticized the UK's less robust stance compared to the U.S. on MB networks operating in Britain.
