The Trump administration removed the United States from 66 international organizations, treaties, and conventions. This decision was justified by the White House as being contrary to U.S. interests. A presidential memorandum indicated that 31 of these entities were affiliated with the United Nations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated these organizations were often mismanaged and served agendas against American interests. Trump aimed to stop sending taxpayer money to foreign interests without benefit. The State Department was ordered to review such organizations in February 2025. Rubio criticized the organizations for being dominated by progressive ideology and detached from national interests. These entities were accused of constraining American sovereignty and promoting a globalist project. The withdrawn U.N.-related entities included various commissions and funds. The non-U.N. organizations included the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact and the Commission for Environmental Cooperation. The memorandum also cited various "hybrid threats. This action followed the earlier withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council. The White House cited the council's tolerance of human rights violators and bias against Israel as reasons.
