Venezuela Quake Disaster Tops 5,000 Deaths As 50,000 Remain Missing

Venezuela's official death toll from twin earthquakes on June 24th has now exceeded 5,000. These devastating quakes struck the coastal state of La Guaira with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The disaster exposed the shoddy construction of mass-housing projects built under the socialist government using low-quality materials and lacking seismic standards. These buildings, constructed with expanded polystyrene panels, collapsed easily during the seismic event. In addition to the fatalities, local authorities reported over 16,700 injuries and more than 6,400 successful rescues. The United Nations estimates that a staggering 50,000 people remain missing following the earthquakes. Venezuela has accessed $346 million from its IMF reserves to initiate rebuilding efforts. The US military is providing critical aid, delivering supplies via ships and aircraft to damaged coastal infrastructure. US forces are actively involved in stabilizing the region post-disaster through their support operations. This US military presence within Venezuela is occurring amidst heightened US military activity near Cuba.
