"Wake up call": House Democrats erupt in panic, anger after another socialist upset

House Democrats are reacting with dismay and concern following the defeat of Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) by a Democratic socialist challenger. Even though DeGette is a progressive, her loss highlights a shift in voter preference towards younger, more outspoken candidates. This defeat is seen by some as a wake-up call for incumbent members of Congress. DeGette lost decisively to 29-year-old Melat Kiros, despite significant outside spending supporting her. Progressive groups also supported Kiros, though their spending was outmatched by DeGette's allies. DeGette's campaign highlighted her progressive record, while Kiros's campaign targeted her corporate PAC donations and votes related to Israel. This loss follows similar upsets of other House Democrats in recent weeks. Some Democrats acknowledge an appetite for new and younger leadership within the party. The Democratic Socialists of America are reportedly benefiting from this trend, particularly with young, educated urban voters. However, some Democrats, like Rep. Emily Randall, are already reaching out to congratulate and welcome the challenger. Rep. Ro Khanna noted that the progressive movement represents a significant source of energy for the party. The left aims to unseat several more Democratic incumbents this election cycle with a slate of progressive candidates running in various districts.
