Walmart is 3D printing the future of big box stores
Walmart is pioneering the use of 3D printing technology for constructing its retail spaces. This initiative aims to reduce operational costs by leveraging automation in construction processes. Thus far, Walmart has completed five store additions using 3D-printed walls across several U.S. states. This represents the largest commercial deployment of 3D-printed architecture in the country. The adoption of this technology is expected to accelerate construction and lower building expenses. Walmart has partnered with Alquist, a 3D printer manufacturer, and FMGI, a long-time contractor, for these projects. FMGI has found that 3D printing can significantly reduce construction time by one-third and costs by 15%. Challenges remain, including weather limitations and the need for precise temperature control during the printing process. However, the company sees significant advantages in speed, accuracy, and attracting new talent to the construction industry. Walmart plans to further expand its use of 3D printing for fuel stations and grocery stores, potentially constructing the world's largest 3D-printed building.
