Walmart To Finally Start Accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay
Walmart is finally adopting tap-to-pay technology, accepting both Apple Pay and Google Pay. This rollout begins August 24 at select Walmart and Sam's Club stores. All stores are expected to have the technology by year-end, with fuel stations following by mid-2027. This decision is surprising because Walmart previously resisted tap-to-pay. Instead, it promoted its own in-house payment solutions, such as Walmart Pay and Scan-and-Go. Walmart even collaborated with other retailers on CurrentC, an unsuccessful attempt to rival Apple Pay. Customers have long requested support for modern tap-and-pay options, like Apple Pay, which is widely accepted elsewhere. For Walmart, this move appears to be a concession after years of trying to push its proprietary payment systems. The company ultimately recognized that its previous stance was inconveniencing its customers.
