The National Rural Water Association and DEF CON Franklin have launched the Water Watch Center to address cybersecurity threats to small U.S. water utilities. This new initiative aims to provide crucial threat intelligence and cybersecurity services to water systems serving fewer than 10,000 people. The program comes at a time when water systems across the nation are experiencing an increase in cyberattacks. Five managed detection and response providers will collaborate with DEF CON Franklin and the NRWA to offer these cyber services. This is significant because 91% of the over 50,000 community water systems in the U.S. fall into this small service category. The program is designed to be a scalable cyber delivery model, a framework that has been challenging to establish previously. Volunteers will help reduce costs for utilities that often face financial constraints. The hand-picked cyber providers already possess expertise in water utility cybersecurity. These companies include Rapid7, Defendify, Legato Security, L1 Secure, and Sentinel Technologies. They will share threat information and vulnerability data with the NRWA, which will act as a central hub for this information exchange.
